BIM Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re involved in the Architecture, Engineering, or Construction industry, you’ve likely heard of BIM (Building Information Modeling).
Here are some short answers to the questions we get asked the most. Get in touch to find out more.

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is a collaborative set of processes, supported by technology, that add value through sharing information for buildings and infrastructure assets.

We manage how models are stored, developed, and maintained to ensure project stakeholders always have access to the most up-to-date – and importantly, accurate – information. We know how to set up and use the best tools on the market to make this happen.

Put simply, BIM allows buildability issues to be identified and resolved before they become real problems on site – problems that often cause delays and cost significantly more to fix later.

BIM provides a high return on investment in several ways. Most notably, it directly reduces the number of RFIs during construction, decreases constructability issues, and helps prevent costly rework on site. For a detailed explanation of the return on investment (ROI) of BIM and the broader benefits of digital adoption in construction, see the Value Case for Digital First by BIMinNZ: biminnz.co.nz/valuecase.

No installation needed! BIM 360, now known as Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) or ACC Build (Autodesk loves a name change), is a cloud-based solution. All you need is an internet connection and an Autodesk account to log in online.

IM is used throughout the design, construction, and asset management phases of building and infrastructure projects. It’s used by designers, planners, builders, and owners alike.

The New Zealand BIM Handbook is a great resource and provides a set of standards for implementing BIM in your projects. You can find it here

  • How to determine what level of BIM is appropriate.

  • How to procure BIM properly—yes, it needs to be clearly defined before engaging the design team.
